34,000 Pounds of Tyson Chicken Recalled Due to Massive Salmonella Outbreak

Who here likes factory farms, show of hands. No one? Okay, good, and unless any of you are currently inmates in the federal prison system (or have children in public school, or work for any federally-run institution), you shouldn’t have to worry about this next piece of news: Tyson Chicken has recalled 34,000 pounds of mechanically separated (read: pink slime) chicken due to a salmonella outbreak.

The New York Times reported this morning that Tyson shipped the contaminated batch out on October 11th (three months ago, ick), and that seven people at a Tennessee correctional facility contracted the illness. Two remain hospitalized.

This recall comes in the wake of mounting concern over food safety, exacerbated by the recent closure of the Food and Drug Administration during the federal shutdown. It also has made us realize that going to prison would suck if we could only eat “mechanically separated chicken products” all day long.
