Andrew Cuomo Supports Anthony Bourdain’s Night Market

It seems everyone in New York City is anxiously awaiting the arrival of Anthony Bourdain’s gargantuan food market, set to open at Pier 57 in about two years. Also excited? Andrew Cuomo, who has given the project his stamp of approval. Of the “SuperPier,” he’s said it will “bring jobs and new investment to the region while also creating a world-class venue for commerce and culture,” according to DNA Info.

The food hall trend has exploded lately, but Bourdain’s will have a different take. It’s massive, coming in at 155,000 square feet, and will be home to none of the usual suspects we’ve come to see at similar places. He plans to bring small vendors from overseas, which sounds to us like “Parts Unknown” come to life. We’re definitely not complaining about that.

He also already has some big names tied to the project. April Bloomfield and Ken Friedman of The Spotted Pig and The Breslin have signed on to operate two food stalls. Roman & Williams, the design firm behind Upland and The Standard is also on board.

The food hall is only part of the enormous structure coming to Pier 57. There will be 480,000 square feet of offices, retail, and other tenants. Google plans to put some of its offices there. There will also be an 80,000 square foot rooftop garden.

According to DNAinfo, the Hudson River Park Trust Board will hold a hearing and a 60-day public comment period and will vote on the lease in March. We’re looking forward to seeing the finished product (mostly the market)!
