WATCH: Andy Ricker’s VICE Documentary Farang In Full
VICE Munchies recently produced its first full-length feature documentary after a slew of food-centric web docu-series. FARANG is the story of Andy Ricker and his successfully authentic Thai food empire, an impressive feat considering his blinding whiteness. But he’s somehow avoided being the target of “ugh gross white savior making Asian cuisine palatable to the white folks” backlash, and is actually super respected. Don’t you want to watch a documentary about how that happened? According to VICE:
The focus of Andy’s culinary mission transformed into representing the culture and food of the people in Northern Thailand as close to traditional as possible. He is constantly reinforcing the idea that he is not a chef, but merely a person who is helping to curate this cuisine in America…FARANG explores Andy’s story from his childhood to present day, and was filmed between Chiang Mai, Portland, and New York City. The filming was mostly done in May 2013 while Andy was getting ready to open his sixth restaurant, Sen Yai.
