Triumphant Bobby Flay Vanquishes Michael Symon In South Beach’s Burger Bash
At every Food Network Wine & Food Festival, Rachael Ray throws an enormous Burger Bash, and every year at SoBe (meaning the past three years) Michael Symon has won, cackling over his opponents’ measly burgers as he rears his shiny head. But in this year’s South Beach Wine and Food Festival, as dozens of celebrity chefs bashed each other with burgers, one man — one unknown underdog — challenged Symon’s burger throne.
That young, unknown upstart was Bobby Flay.
The Huffington Post reports that Flay attempted to take down Symon using secret ingredients from his homeland: queso sauce, potato chips, and the special ingredient, green chili pickles. “The green chili pickles were my secret weapon,” he told them. “I pulled out all the stops for this one.”
What’s more, Flay has tried — and failed — to win the Burger Bash for the past seven years, which is symbolic in a weird, Grimm’s fairy tales sort of way. “It’s about time,” he added, holding aloft his People’s Choice Award like the head of Goliath.
But while Flay reigned victorious in the Ritz Carlton Hotel, a secretive cabal made of Anne Burrell, Andrew Zimmern, Spike Mendelsohn, and Jeffrey Chodorow gave their special Judges’ Award to one Jeff Mauro, the host of the Food Network’s Sandwich King. (And come on, all of those guys would totally have a secretive cabal.)
