Cake Boss Buddy Valastro Reveals His Mom’s ALS Diagnosis
Carlo’s Bakery and the Cake Boss family took a step back from delivering their usual sugary cheer today to make a somber announcement regarding Buddy’s mom, Mary Valastro.
“I can confirm that my mother Mary — the heartbeat of the Valastro family and Momma to all of Carlo’s Bakery — has been diagnosed with ALS,” Buddy told People Magazine.
The fast-moving and ultimately devastating neurogenerative disease has no known cure, but celebrity chefdom is no stranger to coming out in full force in support of research funding for ALS.
Mary Valastro took over the generations-old Carlo’s Bakery after her husband died in 1994, working in it alongside Buddy, and was featured as a Cake Boss regular up until her retirement on the Season 3 premiere in 2010.
“She is tackling it with the strength and determination she always shows,” Buddy added. “The entire family is in this together, fighting for her.”
According to Today.com, Cake Boss’s summer finale will address Mary’s illness and include family reactions, noting that TLC “shares its support with the family.”
You can catch the season finale of Cake Boss on July 23rd.
