Carla Hall Takes to Kickstarter for New Restaurant in New York City, Carla Hall’s Southern Kitchen

The Chew co-host’s new restaurant will be her first foray into New York City’s dining scene, hurray!

Prepare for some “Nashville-style hot chicken” and even a market selling Nashville-made products, reports the Nashville Scene from Carla Hall. Hall told the Nashville Scene the fast-casual restaurant will be a “meat and three” sort of restaurant, with hot chicken and seasonal sides like collard greens, cole slaw, and black eyed peas. Said Hall to the Nashville Scene, “It’s really important to me as a Southerner and African-American to show people that they don’t have to be unhealthy.”

More on the restaurant, and why she chose Kickstarter to fund it:

Carla Hall’s Southern Kitchen will include a pickling station where she hopes to incubate and support the business of a pickle maker who might use cucumbers, beans or green tomatoes and other seasonal vegetables to go along with the hot chicken. Also inside she’ll showcase products from Nashville at Frannie Mae’s Provisions (named for her grandmother) with Olive and Sinclair chocolate bars, for example, and locally made Mista Dale’s Mustard Slaw.

In the democratic spirit of hot chicken and meat-and-threes, she wants it to be a place where all are welcome. Guests will line up to order at a counter and average price for a meal at $15. That’s part of the reason behind a Kickstarter announcement, she says, calling the project “a restaurant for the people.”

Here’s Hall talking a bit more about it, from her Kickstarter page. Hall’s campaign aims to raise $250,000 in a little more than a month, and so far has raised nearly $4,000. We don’t even really know what hot chicken is but we’re in to give this a try.
