With CBS’s New Baking Show, Cooking Competitions Continue To Invade Network TV

First we had MasterChef on Fox, where Joe Bastianich, Graham Elliot, and Gordon Ramsay made some poor amateur chefs cry every Monday night. Then came news of ABC’s The Taste, the upcoming cooking competition featuring Nigella Lawson and a very harried FCC censor hired solely to edit everything Anthony Bourdain said. Now CBS is getting in on the action too, with their newest unnamed baking competition that’s happening. It’s totally happening, guys!

Based on the British television show The Great British Bake-Off, the show pits amateur bakers with a group of experienced judges and the winner gets some sort of fame prize, like money or a book deal or a bakery. Something big. Details are scant at this point, obviously. But we’re willing to bet that it’s very, very similar to MasterChef’s prize.

Open call auditions will soon take place around the country, or you can mail your application in by following the instructions on this site. CBS is now the third of the Major Networks to get in on the cooking competition thing, though we’re betting that, based on their history of excellent broadcast judgement, NBC will be staying faaaaaaaaar away from anything of the sort for a while.

  1. If it’s even half as good as The Great British Bake Off, it will be well worth viewing. But somehow I doubt American TV will have the restraint that makes Bake Off so successful: the show’s ability to focus on absolute minutiae, both in baking and the bakers, is incredible.
