Charles Saatchi Stands To Profit Off Art Depicting Him Choking Nigella Lawson

Charles Saatchi’s online gallery SaatchiArt.com allows artists to upload and sell their own pieces of art with 70% of the sale going to the user and 30% of the sale going to Saatchi Art. Charles Saatchi, while not necessarily hands-on with each and every one of the pieces from over 40,000 artists on the site, obviously receives a cut of the sales. Which is why it’s super effed up that artists are selling images depicting the now-infamous paparazzi shots of Saatchi choking ex-wife Nigella Lawson in a London restaurant last year.

Saatchi stands to make a profit, for example, off a piece on sale for $30,000 which can best be described as “Nigella with hands on throat painted on cutting board.”

When asked about the questionable ethics involved in selling these works, he told the Daily Mail, “‘Would it have been a better story if I had censored artists whose work might be personally disobliging?’”

One of the artists commented, “It’s not really controversial. Saatchi is strangling Nigella but it’s also about him squeezing the art market. It works on many levels. It’s a comment on the art market and how people control it.”

So, this is gross, and we’re done with the internet now.
