Chez Panisse Closed Indefinitely Due To Fire Damage
Although the Chez Panisse staff hoped that they’d be able to reopen the iconic Berkeley, CA restaurant as early as April 15, it turns out that the fire that ravaged the building’s front porch caused more extensive damage than anyone had initially estimated.
Inside Scoop SF reports that instead of simply repairing the facade of the building, “it turns out that Chez Panisse must remove both the top and bottom porches that face Shattuck Avenue.”
“According to the restaurant, this new development means that there will be ‘a more significant demolition project’ ahead,” they continue. “The porches must be demolished and rebuilt, and that means structural repairs both upstairs and downstairs.”
The restaurant itself had hoped to open earlier — in fact, it had begun accepting reservations recently — but acknowledged on its Facebook page that they may have been too optimistic: “We are calling everyone personally to cancel all existing reservations, and we will post new updates as we receive additional information about the progress of the reconstruction,” they informed visitors.
