WATCH: Astronaut Chris Hadfield And Traci Des Jardin Make A Space Burrito…In Space
Last week when David Chang tried to help astronaut Chris Hadfield make shrimp and grits aboard the International Space Station, we wondered why San Francisco chef Traci Des Jardins went with him. It turns out that the Mythbusters/Tested’s Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage brought her to NASA so that she, too, could help feed Canada’s spacefaring hero! (Whatever, America’s Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. On the moon!)
Thanks to her understanding of surface tension (wouldn’t want food floating away in space, after all), Des Jardins puts together a space burrito using food stored on the ISS: stabilized tortillas, bean paste, bits of steak torn by hand, and a generous amount of hot sauce. Sure, it might taste like something a college student would eat “on a regular basis”, as Des Jardins points out, but it’s totally space-able.
Let us repeat: SPACE BURRITO. This is the future! In space, no one can hear you fart! Grant Achatz, where you at?
