Chris Santos: Get Great Charcuterie For a Picnic, Leave The Chocolate at Home

One of the best ways to spend a summer night in New York City is sitting in a park with friend, a bottle of rosé (hide it, but nothing is going to happen), and a picnic, listening to music. This summer, there’s an amazing event at Randall’s Island that brings every aspect of that perfect night together in the most perfect way.

We’re talking about Pinknic, the rosé-themed picnic that’s set to take over the island July 9th and 10th with plenty of wine (note the theme), picnic baskets by celebrity chef Chris Santos (Vandal, Beauty & Essex), and music from Claptone, Miami Horror,Tube & Berger, Slow Hands, Tortured Soul, and others.

Between having his own picnics over the years and curating the baskets for this event, the celebrity chef has learned a lot about the art of eating lunch or dinner on the ground. He sat down with Urban Daddy to talk all things baskets and blankets. Here are his best tips and tricks:

  • Always pack “a combination of salty snacks, something sweet and always some riff on cheese and crackers with delicious charcuterie” to make the perfect basket.
  • Freeze your water overnight. That way, it will melt throughout the day but stay cold.
  • Don’t bring chocolate because “it tends to melt,” and don’t bring anything that can’t be eaten “easily” with your hands.
  • How about grills? “Great idea for groups of four or more. I don’t think it’s worth the trouble of transport for a picnic for two.”
  • He’s got some blanket advice: “I would say something supersoft, and then an extra blanket to bundle up with when you drift off into a blissful food coma at your picnic spot under a tree.”
