WATCH: Cat Cora And Curtis Stone ‘Gobsmacked,’ Ream Cheftestants On 80 Plates
In an Around the World in 80 Plates first last night, hosts Curtis Stone and Cat Cora stormed into the restaurant kitchen during service to scold chefs for a major culinary no-no. The Black Team (Nookie, Avery, Nicole, and Nick) won use of The Exceptional Ingredient (and a cool $10,000) for completing The Course first. In Florence, the reward was access to Nara “Nonna” Romanelli, a well-renowned Tuscan chef, and tiiiiny old granny. She was supposed to teach them first-hand how to make ribolita, their challenge dish as the iconic fare of Florence.
Unfortunately, Nonna didn’t speak any English and so the chefs kind of blew her off while she was demonstrating the dish — a serious faux-pas according to Chef Curtis. When he learned of their disrespectful move, he was, in a word, “gobsmacked.” (Brits [edit: AUSSIES; sorry, accents gobsmack us sometimes] are so cute.) Watch below for Curtis’ Tom Colicchio moment, as he works himself into a (small) rage and slams his chefs.

How embarrassed they should be! This is a prime example of Anglo-centrism, and folks competing on a show called Around the World in 80 Plates should have shown more class than that.
I would LOVE the chance to study a few hours with Nonna. How amazing that would be. Typical American “eye on the prize” thinking that cost them a once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunity.
Chef Curtis Stone is from Australia, not from Britain.
