Dunkin’ Donuts HQ Apologizes For Thai Blackface Ad
Racism outrage, dismissed by Dunkin’ Donuts Thailand’s CEO as “paranoid American thinking” was, indeed, supported by American Dunkin’ Donuts execs (imagine that!), who apologized for an ad spot recently run in Thailand featuring a woman in blackface selling their latest “Charcoal Donut.”
“Dunkin’ Donuts recognizes the insensitivity of this spot and on behalf of our Thailand franchisee and our company, we apologize for any offense it caused,” read a statement. “We are working with our franchisee to immediately pull the television spot and to change the campaign.”
The story broke yesterday, with much overseas kerfuffle, while no one in Thailand really seemed to mind the spots.
Phil Robertson, Thailand-based deputy director of the Human Rights Watch’s Asia division, explained that a “palpable sense of racism” still exists through much of Asia, with an “unfortunate lack of consciousness of what these racist images mean.”
To wit: the Thai CEO suggested that no one would be offended if the ad featured someone in white face.
