Eddie Huang Reveals What His Father Apologized For After Reading Fresh Off The Boat
Eddie Huang wasn’t shy about delving into his difficult childhood and the abuse he sustained at the hands of his parents in his new memoir Fresh Off The Boat, and in a recent interview with NPR’s Weekend Edition, Eddie revealed his father’s reaction after reading the book.
Papa Huang’s first text was one of remorse, and not necessarily about the abuse (which Eddie admitted he didn’t want his father to feel remorseful about anyway).
“He said, ‘I’m sorry that I brought you to this country,’ and that was a shocker to me. He said, ‘I’m sorry that I brought you here; I didn’t know it was that hard for you.’…My dad said, ‘You should raise your kids in China or Taiwan, and I said, ‘No, dad. We won, dad. We won. I’m going to stay here. And I love it, I love New York.’ And I said, ‘Dad we’re going to change the way people think about not just Chinese or Taiwanese or Asian people, but anyone who’s different in general.’…Really you have to fight for yourself, because no one is going to do it for you.”
