elBulli Feature Film Based On Lisa Abend’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentices Gets A Green Light

We cried reading the press release for the upcoming fictional feature dramatizing elBulli’s final year of service before Ferran Adria closed the World’s Best Restaurant at its peak, so we’re pretty on board with the movie itself coming to fruition.

The producers behind Jake Gyllenhaal’s Source Code have picked up the film, whose screenplay was penned by David Wilson, and based on Lisa Abend’s book The Sorcerer’s Apprentices: A Season in the Kitchen at Ferran Adrià’s elBulli. Essentially, the film will frame the restaurant through the eyes of the eager stagiaries that came through its doors.

Said Adria of the project, “Honesty, passion, creativity, freedom, risk, and sharing. This is the spirit of elBulli and this film is a tribute to the 2,000 individuals who passed through the restaurant during its 25 years who participated in creating this spirit.”

32 out of 3000 young chefs applying were chosen to apprentice at elBulli every season, and, according to the press release:

“They were pushed to their competitive limits in a 14-hour-a-day Darwinian process designed to sift out the chefs capable of working in a restaurant voted the world’s best five times, spearheaded by a celebrity chef who has three Michelin stars and who has appeared in almost every major publication on the planet.”

The production is still shopping for a director, but, officially, we’re throwing our hats in the Guillermo Del Toro ring. Obviously.
