Ferran Adria and Nathan Myhrvold Ate Together, and All Was Right with the World

We’re pretty sure this dinner, as described in detail by Dwight Garner for T Magazine, is on par with the Last Supper in influence. Nathan Myhrvold, cooking for Ferran Adria. It’s like Jesus cooking for God? Or the other way around? (OK, that was insensitive of us.) Nevertheless, the dinner is an end-all of cuisine and fine dining, practically bowling over Garner. Adria, on the other hand, is gleefully up for it:

After 45 courses, I was lowing like a cow. In my food- and wine-altered state, I began to meditate on the notion of death by senseless beauty. By the fifth hour, Adrià was openly taunting me. He called out for second helpings while I groaned. “The kind of people who mock long tasting menus,” Adrià said, “are the same people you see lining up at the hotel breakfast buffet, dumping 30 different things on their plates.” Adrià’s future plan is to begin cooking only about 20 nights a year. “Cooking at this level is like giving a concert,” he said. “No one in their right mind gives 300 concerts a year.” The one piece of advice he has given Myhrvold: “Never open a restaurant.”

(We’re sure no one’s going to be offended by Adria’s bashing of hotel buffet lovers, right? …)

And after all of that, Garner still ended the night with a fast-food burger. Not sure what that all really means for “the end of cuisine,” as he calls it. But it’s an epic food porngasm of cuisine, worth a (hunger and jealousy-inducing) read.
