Oh Dear, The Ads For Jeni’s Splendid Rainbow Frozen Yogurt Look Surprisingly Big And Gay (UPDATED)

Rainbows and horses go together like peas and carrots. (See: This, this, this, this, and this.) But for some reason, there’s something oddly familiar — and dare we say, gay? — about the latest flavor at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.

For instance, check out the latest cover photo on their Facebook page, which has a unicorn advertising a rainbow frozen yogurt, as pictured above.

Wow. That’s a BIG, GAY way to sell ICE CREAM, isn’t it?

Look, no one really has a copyright on using rainbows and unicorns to sell products. (See: the “thats” listed above.) However, given the strength of the Big Gay Ice Cream brand, a customer could reasonably be led to believe that rainbows + unicorns + ice cream = this craziness. And given that Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream’s aesthetic has long been hipsteresque Instagram stylings, this drift into ecstasy-dropping, J-pop unicornery is kind of a 180. Seriously, just watch this video advertising the frozen yogurt, we’re not lying:

Rainbow Frozen Yogurt: Real & Magical from Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams on Vimeo.

We see what you’re doing there, Jeni. But just because you’re touching the unicorn don’t make you pure of heart.

UPDATE: According to the gentlest, sweetest Twitter exchange witnessed, all is good between Big Gay Ice Cream and Jeni’s, the latter chalking it up to a coincidence that won’t happen again beyond this campaign. Unicorn love powers: preventing ice cream wars and lawsuits since 1036 AD.

We love Big Gay. But the inspiration for the Rainbow Frozen Yogurt campaign was The Last Unicorn. Remember that flick? A lot of us here grew up with it. http://instagram.com/p/SsiyD8Dbge/

It’s a campaign, not a brand change. Pure nostalgia. 7th grade.
