Jim Henson Company Cuts Ties With Chick-fil-A Over Gay Marriage Controversy

Of all the people who have publicly denounced Chick-fil-A for their statements condemning gay marriage, this one has to be the most devastating to your inner child. The Jim Henson Company — sweet, innocent Jim Henson Company, with their Kermits and Fozzie Bears and Big Birds and Snuffleuppagi — announced yesterday that it would sever their business ties with the chicken company.

“The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors,” the company said in a statement on their Facebook page.

Prior to CEO Dan Cathy’s statement that he and his company were unapologetically anti-gay marriage (and anti-gay, to a further extent), the Jim Henson Company had manufactured Creature Shop toys for the chain’s kids’ meals. But even though Sesame Street will never ever take Bert and Ernie out of their closet, the entire point of everything Jim Henson did was to discourage hate and bigotry. (And come on. Rainbow Connection.)

To add more insult (or principle, depending on how you look at it) to injury, they decided to stick it to Chick-fil-A: “Lisa Henson, our CEO is personally a strong supporter of gay marriage and has directed us to donate the payment we received from Chick-Fil-A to GLAAD.”

What a Miss Piggy move.

  1. YAY! The Jim Henson Company has always had a strong moral compass!

I still stand by Chik’s decision to follow their own moral compass–I think all businesses need to have strong moral beliefs and operate according them. However, since I disagree with Chik, I just won’t go there.
