WATCH: Joe Bastianich Spits Out Contestant’s Inedible, ‘Cacophonous’ Dessert
One of the things we learned on MasterChef last night was that people who don’t know shit about tiramisu always try to put nuts in, on, or around it, and that is always a bad idea. Another: that star anise has no business in a trifle.
On last night’s episode, contestant Becky committed the latter sin, despite being the self-proclaimed dessert girl. She was given a trifle to compose, and her combination of strong flavors majorly flopped. We believe Joe Bastianich’s exact words were, “a cacophony of dissonant flavors that make absolutely no sense, complete excess, and quite frankly, an embarrassing dish that I wouldn’t even recommend eating. (to fellow judges) I don’t think that’s edible.”
Rough. Graham Elliot even gave Becky’s candied orange peel garnish a “really?” look. Check out the clip below, because, hot damn, do we love it when show-offs crash and burn.

This was certainly a twist I was not expecting with this episode when they picked the worst dishes and judged between them. The parfait was the winner, (of sorts) and safe. The challenges on the show are fun and I’m glad they switch things up. My family started watching one day last year when a Dish co-worker/friend suggested watching. The show is one of our favorites now on our PrimeTime Anytime recordings that we use for watching commercial free with Auto Hop. That way we can see more TV shows in one evening by saving over 20 minutes an hour. Sometimes it is fun to watch two episodes in one night too, which we did this week.
