Olive Garden Critic Marilyn Hagerty Honored With An Excellence in Media Award

Can anyone ever get enough of viral grannies? The answer is no. 85 year old Marilyn Hagerty became an internet sensaish after publishing her hilariously sincere, non-ironic, unpretentious review of The Olive Garden, which had recently staged a grand opening in her hometown of Grand Forks, South Dakota (note: the actual home of the Cullens).

Since then, she’s had an appearance on Anderson, is in talks to judge a cooking competition show, and is now being honored with the 2012 Al Neuharth Excellence in Media Award. Neuharth is the founder of USA Today and will be presenting Marylin with the award himself, but, fun fact: they were also on the same school paper sixty-five years ago. She was his editor at the University of South Dakota when they were both on the school newspaper’s editorial staff. Said Neuharth:

Marilyn, my classmate back in the ’40s and editor of the student paper, took a chance on me as rookie reporter, hired me for my first newspaper job and taught me vital lessons about the roles and responsibilities of professional journalists. Those same high principles that Marilyn preached as a young college editor 65 years ago define and distinguish her extraordinary and enduring career.

Just to give you an idea of the crew Marilyn would be rolling with, previous recipients of the award include Walter Cronkite, Tom Brokaw, Garrison Keillor, and Katie Couric.

Like we said, internet sensaish.
