Mario Batali And Del Posto Settle Workers Lawsuit For $1.15 Million

Yesterday, the renowned restaurant Del Posto announced that it reached a $1.15 million settlement with workers after being hit with a lawsuit earlier this year.

The suit, which was filed by the Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York (ROC-NY) back in 2010, alleged that management at Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich’s restaurant not only withheld wages and overtime pay, but also subjected workers, many of whom were of Latino descent, to routine verbal harassment and racial discrimination.

A judge approved of the settlement on Monday, according to a press release from the advocacy group, and in a statement to the New York Times, Batali denied the allegations against Del Posto, maintaining that “they remain committed to ensuring that employees receive all compensation to which they are entitled, including all tips.”

However, the restaurant has decided to enter into a partnership with ROC-NY to ensure that their workers are being fairly compensated and treated with respect. This means sensitivity training, as well as a renewed emphasis on promoting workers from within.

While this is the second high-profile lawsuit launched by workers against a B&B Restaurants property (earlier this year, the company agreed to settle a $5.25 million class action lawsuit for similar claims), Batali and Bastianich can take comfort in one thing: at least they can pay the rent.
