Nancy Oakes Wins The Top James Beard Award, Talks East Vs. West Coast Cooking
HuffPost San Francisco has a in-depth long interview with Boulevard chef Nancy Oakes, fresh off her win at the James Beard Awards for Outstanding Restaurant. Her win, however, was unusual and, as she put it, “unexpected.” First, the 20-year-old Boulevard does not belong to a Big Name Restaurant Group run by a Big Name Chef; second, the Beard Foundation, based in New York, doesn’t usually honor West Coast restaurants in the Outstanding Restaurant category.
Oakes does think that “New York restaurants have really taken a look west in a way that they haven’t done before, especially in regards to vegetables and produce,” and that “Jean-Georges’ ABC Kitchen is a great example.” So much for an intense East Coast vs. West Coast rivalry.
