OpenTable’s Diners’ Choice Awards Reveal Preference For Celebrity Chef Restaurants

Over the past year, OpenTable has gathered over 5 million reviews of 15,000 restaurants nationwide, and has now released a list of the best of the best — that is, as chosen by the people.

The Huffington Post noted that in this list of 100 restaurants from 27 states, two trends appeared: first, many of the restaurants happened to be run by chefs familiar to readers of The Braiser — in fact, most of the restaurants regularly appear on this site. (To list but a few: The Batali-Bastianich Group’s Del Posto, Anita Lo’s Annisa, Dan Barber’s Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Marc Vetri’s eponymous restaurant in Philadelphia, and both of Thomas Keller’s restaurants.)

But second, the overwhelming appearance of random restaurants in small towns indicated a bias: a cursory review of some of the lesser-known winners “indicate[d] that these spots are highly regarded among locals due to their historical significance rather than the quality of their cuisine.”

The full list can be seen here, and like all lists, it’s slightly imperfect — and heck, it might not even be the best way of listing the nation’s favorite restaurants — but it’s a damn good way of figuring out whether that restaurant you want to go to is ever going to have a reservation.
