New Zealand Deports South African Chef For Being Overweight

We’re all for taking radical measures to fight obesity, but in this case, New Zealand is kind of being a jerk. Stick with us.

So six years ago, a South African chef named Albert Buitenhuis immigrated to New Zealand weighing 352 pounds. No problem. He’s lived there ever since with his wife, both of them renewing their work visas on an annual basis without issue. Until this year. Despite the fact that he’s lost a significant amount of weight, having slimmed down to 286 pounds, officials have denied his visa renewal for the first time on the grounds that he isn’t maintaining “an acceptable standard of health.”

New Zealand suffers a 30% obesity rate, and is apparently instituting a crackdown to rescue its healthcare system from being exploited.

“It is important that all migrants have an acceptable standard of health to minimise costs and demands on New Zealand’s health services,” an immigration spokesperson told BBC.

Says Buitenhuis’ wife of when they first immigrated:

“They never mentioned Albert’s weight or his health once and he was a lot heavier then…The irony is that at the moment he weighs less than when we first arrived in New Zealand and also less than in his first medical, which was accepted by [immigration authorities].”

What’s up with that, Kiwis?
