Padma Lakshmi On How She Dresses For Her Top Chef Weight Gain

Padma Lakshmi may be the former-model-turned-reality-food-competition-host/judge fans love to hate, but her no-nonsense, down to earth, and wholly un-snobby approach to style might quell even the harshest critics.

She recently appeared in the New York Times for their “What I Wore” column and described the pitfalls even models face in front of the camera on a food show. Said Padma:

“People think that TV is three-dimensional, but it’s really two-dimensional. So there are a lot of clothes that I have that are beautiful and very drapey, but they don’t look good on camera. The trap is that you’ll come off like a glorified weather girl.”

Structured, wrinkle-resistant pieces are Padma’s camera-ready go-to instead. She also keeps clothes in a range of sizes on hand for her inevitable Top Chef shooting weight-gain, and stresses the importance of dressing the size that you are:

“For wardrobe, we have dresses in a 2, 4, 6 and 8. Women tend to gravitate toward the same size even if they know they’ve gained weight. But you’ll look much slimmer if you just go up a size because it fits properly. Nobody is looking at the tag behind your neck.”

Preach!
