Jean-Georges Vongerichten Reopens Perry Street Four Months After Hurricane Sandy Destroyed It
After Hurricane Sandy flooded Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s West Village restaurant Perry Street, which is nestled inside his own high-rise residence, six feet of water in the kitchen, an inch and a half in the dining room, overflowed grease traps, and an electrical short killing the elevators shut down the whole building for two months. Displaced residents included Calvin Klein and Wolverine Hugh Jackman.
Now, more than four months after Hurricane Sandy, Perry Street is reopening after a makeover from its original architect Thomas Juul-Hansen.
“It’s like my living room,” Vongerichten fondly told Architectural Digest of the restaurant. “My daughter and wife will go down and order a burger and fries, or pasta for dinner.”
His son Cedric is also the chef-de-cuisine, although he lives elsewhere in the neighborhood, rather than a convenient elevator ride away.
After a long winter of indefinite restaurant closings due to Sandy damage, we’re glad to finally hear of a happy ending somewhere.
