WATCH: Rachael Ray Reveals The Root Of Her Baking Trauma
As you may or may not be aware, Rachael Ray is a terrible baker. Every time she invites Cake Boss Buddy Valastro onto her show, she’s mercilessly mocked. But today was different.
Today, Rachael bravely admitted the source of her baking woes. It turns out she’s been battling a 32-year-long bout of PTSD surrounding a crucial childhood baking disaster. Apparently, when Rachael was 12, she attempted to bake her mom a lemon cottage cake out of a vintage cookbook of hers for her birthday. It was supposedly her mom’s favorite recipe. The resulting cake tasted like “a big lemon hockey puck,” and Rachael never went near it again — until now.
Buddy sensitively walked her through putting the cake together without any insults or cheap shots. Everyone could see how serious and difficult this was for Rachael. Adding insult to injury, the cake called for lemon curd, with which Rachael has an equally tenuous relationship: once, when she was on Mario Batali’s kitchen team on Iron Chef: America, he had her making lemon curd for 30 minutes of his 60-minute challenge. She was sentenced to standing in the same spot whisking for half an hour straight.
