Robert Irvine Schmoozes With Us At SWEET

Somehow last night we found Food Network tough guy Robert Irvine floating around SWEET with his wife, and we have to say, seeing Robert and his biceps and his black disaster T-shirt among a glittery pile of pastel cupcakes was sort of unexpected. But hey, we can’t pass up an opportunity to make amends with a guy we’ve zinged in the past — or at least, ask him a few questions with “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” blaring in the background.

The Braiser: What are you looking forward to most this weekend?

Robert Irvine: Catching up with old friends, meeting new friends, and teaching people how to eat healthy, cook with fun, and exercise.

Right, you have a demo!

I have a demo, Saturday at 3 o’clock; a book signing, and we’re gonna have a lot of fun.

I remember that you did an episode [of Restaurant: Impossible] with Michelle Obama. Do you still keep in touch with the school you renovated?

I do! They’re doing great. I also keep in touch with the First Lady, and a lot of other things with the Administration. They have a Culinary Council which I’m on, so we’re all about Michelle Obama’s — forget the politics, Michelle Obama’s all about health, kids’ education, and food, and I thoroughly enjoy that point of view. It’s all about kids. You know, we can get wrapped up in politics, and of course the country is going through that now. This is not about politics. This is about kids, and their future in health.

Are you doing anything with the State Department’s Culinary Corps as well?

I am, actually! I’m actually on it.

Are you going abroad?

I’m doing a lot with them that I can’t talk about.

Ohhhhh, okay, fine.

But I’ve been working with the White House for many, many years.
