Sommelier Breaks World Record For Holding Most Wine Glasses
Were you aware that there was a world record for the most wine glasses held by one person at a time? And that you can hold them like that crazy pyramid displayed in the above photo?
The person holding them, Phillipe Osenton, is a British-born sommelier currently working in Beijing. And those are an astonishing 51 wineglasses — 12 more than the original record — that he held without dropping.
“When I was head sommelier at the Ritz Hotel, I’ve had a 140-cover restaurant to set up in the morning between breakfast and lunch,” he said, explaining how his work had prepared him to carry a pyramid of glass death. “So basically with two glasses per setting I had 280 glasses to put out with a very short amount of time.”
And he’s not even done yet: “With the right glass I think I could do a few more,” he tells The Drinks Business. ”This is not the ideal glass, it is a Libby glass, but it’s not perfect. If I found the perfect glass I think I could do a few more.”
What would have prevented him from achieving that record: if he did it outside during Hurricane Sandy.
