The Cost of Eating Animals Reaches an All-Time High

Meat, poultry, and fish prices ticked up 8% in the past year. 8% may not seem like a lot, but in the context of historical protein prices, this means that the price of buying protein is at an all-time high.

According to data reported by the New York Post, ground beef and pork have been hit the hardest, with price increases of 11% and 9.4% since last year, respectively. In other animals, fish prices went up 4.2% and poultry prices grew by a mere 1.3%. While the price of proteins has risen steadily since 2011, the Department of Labor says that the past month alone saw the sharpest uptick in meat costs (1.4%) — and is only supposed to rise higher in July. (Yes, you’re going to have to eat soy ribs on the Fourth of July. Deal with it.)

If you want to yell at inanimate objects for increasing the price of your animals, here is what you should yell at:

  • Droughts (for causing grain shortages)
  • Fewer cows (because there’s no grain to feed them)
  • Pig viruses
  • Increasing demand for meat in developing nations (shut up, China)
  • Global warming (because it always goes back to global warming)
