The Most Sexist Food Ads Of All Time

Ladies, we’ve come a long way, baby, in earning some R-E-S-P-E-C-T in the media, especially when it comes to how we’re portrayed in food ads. Or have we?

Food ads are still keepin’ it real. Real sexist, that is. We’ve gone from seeing women in print adverts getting spanked by their husbands for making sh*ttty cups of coffee, to women being laid out on a plate like a hot piece of meat. Frankly, we don’t know why we’re surprised that so much sexism still runs rampant in advertising — just look at the hugely popular business of “breastaurants” booming around the country. Picture it: lodge-like eateries full of women huddled together with more huge breasts in sight than in a Russ Meyer movie (Seinfeld reference) who have the job of catering to (mainly) men with cold beer, hot wings, and loaded burgers in “uniforms” not far removed from what a model wears on the cover of a Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.

Sexist stereotypes in food ads don’t exactly pop off like they used to. But pop off they do. With every step forward women make in the food and dining industry, there’s always a blatantly sexist and misogynistic ad campaign to take us a step back. Sexist stereotypes in ads continue to morph into the patriarchal expectations of society, with ad agencies using the same old tired, sexist tropes busy dictating how women should look, act, and ultimately, who they are.

A grip of food ads exist that dish out the group-think that objectifying women and ensconcing them with as many hot and steamy sex references as possible is the sure-fire way to go when it comes to advertising food and eateries. So many of them that it would seem such a daunting task to narrow the list down to the top offenders. Fear not, for we’ve done the work for you and gathered together 11 of the most modern sexist food ads of all time, the ones that succeed royally at objectifying women. As well as pissing many of them off.
