This Restaurant Is Engaged in a Footloose Type Legal Battle

Things we’ve come to learn since reading up on one California restauranteur’s legal battle against the city of Roseville: that dance ordinances do in fact exist, and that Footloose is in fact real.

A restaurant owner is suing the city of Roseville, Calif. for his 2012 arrest, for allegedly violating the city’s dance ordinance — and allowing his customers to just dance, Lady Gaga-style. (We don’t know if it was Lady Gaga-style, but we can only assume so by allowing customers to dance in a restaurant.) Len Travis’ restaurant, Roseville Station, is not inside the city’s entertainment zone, specially zoned to allow for dancing — meaning that dancing is not allowed in Roseville Station. Travis is suing for a false arrest, with his lawyer arguing that “In Roseville, they don’t like freedom.” For real, it’s like a real-life Footloose!

Of course, then the city released a statement to CBS Sacramento, which published the original story:

At its heart, this is a zoning issue. It is completely inaccurate to characterize the City of Roseville as banning dancing. No individual has ever been arrested, including Mr. Travis, for violating the dance ordinance. Mr. Travis’ arrest was the result of an altogether different situation. From the beginning of this, the City of Roseville has simply reacted to numerous citizen complaints about activities at The Station.

So … no Footloose after all? We were kind of hoping Kevin Bacon would step in and solve all of our dancing woes.
