Top Chef Recap: “It’s a Dry Heat”

Welcome back, people.

This week the cheftestants are in Palm Springs. Carl hopes that the San Andreas fault doesn’t open and swallow him whole; I’m inclined to agree. José Andrés is the guest judge for this week, and to no one’s surprise, Marjorie has worked under him.

The Quickfire challenge is to make a dish in 30 minutes using the “cleanest energy around: the sun.” They’ll cook using different types of solar cooking equipment. Giselle is frantic because she picks “exactly what she didn’t want- the oven.” It appears the oven doesn’t want her either because she immediately pours water into it and it explodes everywhere. Philip picks up some rocks to use as plates, because of course he is. This would surely not result in an “A” health department rating if it were a real restaurant. It’s also irritating.

Everyone seems to be doing pretty well, until they get to Philip. Padma calls his dish “snot on a rock.” The bottom three are Grayson, Philip and Giselle.

They loved Jeremy, Wesley, and Isaac’s dishes, and Wesley wins the Quickfire challenge, granting him immunity.

For the eliminations challenge, the chefs are broken into two teams based on the equipment they used in the Quickfire challenge. Each team needs to create a four-course progressive meal to be served on a golf course, without a kitchen, from refreshment carts.

Giselle and Angelina bicker about having to be together, and Philip is annoying about the dessert his wife coached at Coachella but other than that everything goes off without a hitch.

Jeremy and Karen make ceviche for the blue team’s first course, and the judges love it. Kwame and Chad, competing for the orange team also make ceviche (mistake), and it’s impossible for the judges not to compare them. The second ceviche was a bit too warm.

Did the course 2 teams not listen to me from the paragraph above? Don’t make the same thing as your competitor! Both teams are grilling shrimp. Grayson and Angelina’s (orange) is meh, and Marjorie and Jason’s (blue) is excellent. Marjorie kills it all the time and could definitely win this season.

For the third course, Carl and Wesley (blue) are making roasted pork loin, and Giselle and Amar (orange) are making steak. Amar doubts Giselle’s abilities so he’s having her make salsa. The blue team does better; Amar and Giselle’s components feel like two separate dishes, although Tom Colicchio likes it.

We’re onto the fourth and final course, and Isaac (orange) and Philip (blue) are having trouble keeping their burners lit. The judges love Isaac’s grapefruit dish, but Phil’s coconut pudding doesn’t go over as well, and I do a tiny happy dance. Guy needs to go home.

Round Up
