WATCH: Chef Chops, Stirs, and Cooks With High-Tech Bionic Hand

In 2011, chef and outdoorsman Eduardo Garcia lost his left hand in an accident, throwing his culinary career into limbo. As anyone who’s ever worked in a kitchen knows, hands are irreparably useful tools. But after years of therapy, he got fitted with a high-tech, bionic hand prosthetic this month and holy shit he can cook with it.

In this segment for Portland’s KPTV, Garcia demonstrates some of the twenty-five different grips his Bluetooth-enabled robot hand can make, controlled by electrical signals generated in his arm muscles. The level of control he has over his new hand enables the classically-trained chef to finely chop vegetables, hold a peach, and, most impressively, open a vanilla bean pod. His hand can go 24 hours without recharging, allowing him to pull long shifts in his healthy food company, Montana Mex.

Oh god we love science and this is so cool and also his story.
