Early this morning, a fire broke out on the first floor of the revolutionary Chez Panisse in Berkeley, CA. Though the damage was thankfully limited to the front area of the restaurant, it nonetheless will force the restaurant to close for the indefinite future.
In a press conference today, a visibly shaken Alice Waters told reporters that she has no plans to close the restaurant permanently. “It’s really important that we rebuild,” she said, according to footage obtained by Eater (which has been covering the fire extensively).
“I’m just glad no one was in the building,” she continued. “It’s really amazing. … That’s a great relief that in the middle of the night that this happened. It really focuses all your attention on what’s important.”
