WATCH: Tom Colicchio Talks Hunger with Christiane Amanpour
With the last season of Top Chef in the can, Tom Colicchio went back to CNN to discuss his crusade against childhood hunger — a crusade that just became more difficult with the draconian cuts made to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
“You know, the idea that people are hungry because they’re lazy and they don’t want to work just is not true,” he told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in an interview that aired last night.
He then went on to pin the cause of American hunger — something that seems impossible in America — on the Reaganomics of the 1980’s. “At one point we pretty much solved hunger in this country, and the ideology changed,” he explained. “We started talking about ‘a thousand points of light,’ and we started talking about charity taking care of all of society’s ills, and the government stepped out.”
As we all know, that didn’t work out so well: “The average person is on food stamps for only nine months. The average person who is on food stamps was working the year before and the year after.”
